Can you burn osage orange
I have a wood chuck furnace basically a big steel stove in a sheet metal box. Nov 21, Lafayette, Indiana. Like most things in life too much of a good thing can lead to issues. Hedge fits into that. That stuff burns HOT!
If you don't have real good control of your combustion air, you can very easily have a "glowing stove". Jan 18, 48 central nebraska. I have a friend that burns it exclusively. He brings up a huge trailer load home every time he goes to Kansas. I think he burns it in a Dutchwest cast iron cat stove. As I recall he cuts it green since it is hard as steel when dry. Seems like it has the highest btu output of any wood.
He usually puts in a few splits and turns down the air. Burns long and hot. Never seen a stove respond like that. Sounded like a chimney fire x I asked about the chimney and he said he had a custom built one by a brick layer. It really impressed me how well it draws. As a kid, we would burn a few broken fence posts made from it from time to time in a steel stove. I would have to agree to mix it with other wood first and go from there.
Bugboy New Member. Mar 5, north-central Kansas. I burn a lot of hedge. It's a great wood except throws a lot of sparks. I wouldn't worry about it melting your stove or anything. May 1, Granville, Ohio. I get some now and again. Chain saw blades have to be sharpened often. I have a 30 ton splitter and it struggles at times to split it. To light it I use other wood to start it burning. But when it gets going it burns like coal. But you want a door on your stove as it sometimes puts on a fireworks display that is awesome.
I live one hour south of Albany ny in Schoharie county. I burn 8 cords of wood a year, for heat and year round hot water. Sure would be very cool if someone could point me in the right direction where I might be able to get permission from a land owner to cut some Osage to mix in my winter firewood pile!!! It is very good but you do need to be able to close it up because it really lights up a room with sparks.
I have customers that but it and really are happy. It is one my higher priced woods also. So I must assume that this super wood takes twice as long to season as common hardwoods? I would set this aside for fence posts and timber wood for the construction of strong structures. I have it here and there all over my 90 acres in NE Oklahoma and I highly value it.
Wonderful natural resource. You can burn this wood weeks after you cut it. This stuff will grow horizontally out of a creek bed. It burns a long time, and burns hot. As a kid, my aunt and uncle heated their house with a pot bellied wood cookstove. I remember my aunt and uncle going out and cutting hedge. They told me it was the best wood to use for firing up a stove. When combustion gasses built up in pockets they explode, causing sparking.
These pockets might very well form from shrinkage and fibre separation from the heat of the fire, like when honeycombing from rapid drying. Sumac is a known toxic burning wood of North America. You are not to use it with the preparation of food. As noted in a comment, all wood can be considered to release toxins in the smoke when burned. You may be exposed to more toxic smoke if you burn hotter fires.
